The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a list of common driver assistance features you can have included:
- Braking assistance can include everything from having the car automatically apply the brakes if you are about to rear-end the vehicle in front of you to braking to avoid hitting a pedestrian. Some systems will sound an alarm if a crash is imminent and then kick in if the driver has not taken action.
- A backup camera is a standard feature in many late-model vehicles. It eliminates the danger of running into something or someone that is behind you that you can’t see by looking in the rear-view mirror or turning your head.
- Lane assistance features come in two models. One will alert the driver if he or she is starting to drift out of the lane the vehicle currently occupies. Another model will automatically apply the steering wheel, the brakes, the accelerator pedal, or a combination to keep your vehicle in your lane.
- A blind spot detection system will sound an alarm if you are about to change lanes, and another vehicle is in your blind spot.
- A 911 notification system will automatically alert emergency responders if it detects a sudden deceleration or an airbag deployment.
